Founded by a Survivor, now an Aliver, Survivors to Alivers’ mission is to provide programs and services to survivors of sexual abuse and rape as well as increase prevention through public awareness and education.
Awareness is a key component of our organization. Our focus is two-fold:
1. Increasing public awareness for the purpose of prevention.
2. Increasing awareness and understanding of the effects of sexual abuse and rape for survivors to give them what they need to find the courage and strength to become an Aliver by making the choice to heal.
So what is an Aliver? Pronounced uh-liv-er, an Aliver is someone who has survived abuse and has decided that surviving is not enough. She or he wants to heal and live again. As stated in "The Courage To Heal Workbook" by Laura Davis:
"The "decision to heal" refers to the decision to face your fears and to change your life. The moment you say "I am a survivor and I want the pain to go away," you begin shaping your commitment to heal. Yet the decision to heal is not a decision you make once; it is one you have to make over and over again. Each stage of the healing process presents new challenges, risks, fears, and opportunities; each requires that you renew your commitment........ The decision to heal is one of the scariest and most empowering decisions you'll ever make....... It takes courage to say yes to your own healing."
Some attributes and traits of Alivers are:
Awareness - Alivers are aware of their own strengths and vulnerabilities. They embrace both. They are aware of the fact that healing is something they have to choose over and over again and they are committed to doing the work it takes to heal.
Love - Alivers are learning how to love and be loved. They are learning to trust. They are learning to create and maintain healthy relationships. Alivers are learning to love themselves.
Victory - Alivers acknowledge and celebrate the fact that surviving in itself is a victory. Alivers take great pride in daily victories, whether it’s celebrating a moment in which they were able to trust in a situation they previously would have been too fearful to do so or their ability to laugh when they previously would have cried, they celebrate that victory. Alivers are full of energy and spirit.
Empathy - Alivers are able to empathize with others. They draw on their own personal journey of healing to feel the pain of others.
Resilience - Alivers are resilient. They have the ability to be stretched, bent, and compressed under the pressures of life and return back to an improved version of their original form time after time. Alivers are on the journey of restoration and their resilience allows them to continue on through times of struggle and pain.
